NBME Self-Assessments
The NBME provides a variety of web-based self-assessments to US and international medical students and graduates. The self-assessments are not intended to predict performance on the United States Medical Licensing Examination® (USMLE®) or NBME subject examinations. Rather, the material presented in the self-assessments is provided by the NBME for educational purposes only.
Self-Assessments for USMLE
The Comprehensive Basic Science, Clinical Science, and Clinical Medicine self-assessments allow you to assess your readiness to take USMLE or help you to become familiar with content on USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 3.
Comprehensive Basic Science Self-Assessment (CBSSA)
The CBSSA uses multiple-choice items based on information typically covered during basic science medical education courses. The content of the CBSSA items resembles the content of those in Step 1.
Comprehensive Clinical Science Self-Assessment (CCSSA)
The CCSSA uses multiple-choice items based on information typically covered during the core clinical clerkships. The content of the CCSSA items resembles the content of those in USMLE Step 2 CK.
Comprehensive Clinical Medicine Self-Assessment (CCMSA)
The CCMSA uses information typically covered in clinical encounters. The content of the CCMSA items resembles the content of those in the multiple choice component of USMLE Step 3.
Additional practice and informational materials are available on the USMLE web site .

Self-Assessment Performance Feedback
Participants receive performance feedback immediately after completing a self-assessment. Individual performance profiles includes:
  • An individual performance profile with diagnostic feedback that highlights areas of strength and weakness; *
  • A score interpretation guide with a conversion table that translates an assessment score to an approximated total score on the USMLE score scale; **
  • The number of items answered incorrectly by content category;
  • The ability to review the text of items answered incorrectly with their correct answers (explanations for the correct answers will not be included); and,
  • The ability to review longitudinal feedback across all content areas.
The correct answer feature will be available for the Clinical Science Mastery Series (CSMS) and International Foundations of Medicine (IFOM) Clinical Science self-assessments in 2018.

* Not available for Mastery Series and IFOM self-assessments.
